Is it that or is Barry not implementing the vision LaFleur has for the defense? There has definitely been a change in defensive philosophy the last 4 weeks.
Who knows. It could be that MLF himself was initially in favor of the passive stuff Barry was running, then wanted the ensuing changes. Or MLF entrusts the D to Barry at first because he is more tied up in the offense, but now that he has the O running nicely, he is freed up to work on the defense more with Barry. We can only guess what's taking place there.

What seems clear to me though is MLF enjoys more than token input into Barry's game-planning.

So do we see MLF finding any new DC who will agree to yield some control to the HC? Do we see MLF giving up the control he enjoys to a new DC that wants to be fully autonomous?

I just don't see MLF wanting to give up the control he enjoys with Barry, especially with the D playing pretty well now.

And the only DC candidates that I can imagine being okay with not having autonomy over their unit... are guys like Joe Barry himself when we hired him, i.e. guys who have no other prospects of being DC, not bright young minds or proven veteran coaches, either of which we as fans would prefer.

I don't think that is clear at all. I think it is clear LaFleur feels he has needed to be more involved in the defense, but whether that is because he wants to or not is another story.

I meant 'enjoy' as in 'possess' not as in 'relish.'

But people do tend to relish in having power (and are loath to let it go).

For the record, not saying I like or agree with that dynamic, in fact I would prefer to have a DC who puts together good gameplans independently and for MLF to focus solely on constantly improving/refining the offense.... but I think MLF might be a bit of a Control Freak.

That's what I mean too, I can't say if he wants that power or simply feels he has to be a part of it to get what he wants out of the Defense. If the latter, you would think it is more likely that Barry gets fired, right?

I doubt Lafleur would want anything to do with the defense, he has been forced to involve himself with it do to the inept ability of Barry to make adjustments, lets not forget that Matt was called out by Rasul Douglas for lack of accountability, seriously do folks actually think Douglas was calling out a bunch of offensive Rookies for not playing well? that makes about as much sense as Barry locking Alexander up against the weakest receiver the opponent has, opponents have had a easy time scheming up our defense because Barry makes creating mis matches a piece of cake.

does no good to throw ice water on anything mid season, by that time it's to hard to have success with a new cord, best to just lend as much support as possible to keep Barry focused, and this last month Lafleur has done a good job with that one week at a time, lets hope he keeps it up.

once it's over it'll also be over for Barry.

Come on, we've talked about this, I've asked, nicely, where you had seen it. That just never happened. Totally free to rag on Barry and have opinions on what we should do, but don't draw conclusions from fabricated information.

We like Joe Barry now, didn't you get the memo :rotf:

Didn't Bill shied the Jets away years ago? or was that the Giants? whatever thats a long time ago

I think Saleh is safe, and think Billy B is bound for Atlanta, perfect situation, some very good players, weak division, just needs someone to steer the boat, Saleh and Rodgers will die together, Douglas the GM might go down with them, orrrr, they dance together on the stage next Jan. theirs really no middle ground :)

A couple of things.
First is that most of the youth is on the O. MLF had to simplify the play calling until about mid season. Now he has a little more time to devote to the D.
Secondly, maybe Barry asked for help from MLF. And going back to #1, now MLF has time to give.
Thirdly, maybe Barry simply has matured as a DC. Every coach makes mistakes and he is still making his share, but now the talent on the front 7 is covering up most of the mistakes.

But I still wish Rasul was still a Packer

I am most intrigued by Chris Hewitt, Passing Game Coordinator/Secondary Coach for the Ravens.

That's a team that is consistently good on defense and Hewitt has been a part of their success since 2015. As pass game coordinator/secondary coach, his next logical progression step would be DC. If he's able to poach a coach or two from that perennially good staff, it resets the entire culture of what has been a decade+ long struggle for our defense.
Christian Watson’s dad agrees with me. :aok:

Is he not next in line for the Ravens DC job? Surely McDonald is up outta there for a HC job. No shot he won’t be. So I feel like the natural progression is to go from pad fake coordinator to DC.

Yeah I doubt he'd take any jobs until he sees what happens with McDonald.

Interesting to see what happens with the teams still playing whose coordinators are hot candidates.

The Ravens actually have 3 viable McDonald replacements already on staff. There's 1) Chris Hewitt (Secondary/Pass game coord., who we're already talking about), 2) Anthony Weaver (Asst HC/DL Coach), and 3) Zach Orr (ILB Coach) who are all very highly thought of.

There's no telling who would eventually succeed McDonald but I would think the guy with the Asst HC title would get first dibs at DC. Where that leaves the other two is anybody's guess.
