There is a clip on the Packers' website and it sounds like McKinney is excited to be here.
I read a clip that said he wasn’t…

Of course he’s excited!!

Over my years of watching and being around football, I have learned that the 2 most important traits that determine a player's success, by far, are intelligence and grit. You can take a guy with average measureables, and if he has a superior brain, and is willing to sacrifice his body, fearlessly squaring up the ball carrier, bombing the pile- he will be a Pro Bowler with HOF potential if he stays healthy.

I really would have liked to see a DB drafted in the first round. Maybe one of the backups or PS players from last season will be adequate as the other safety, I hope so but don't have a lot of confidence. And it appears that slot CB will not be upgraded except through experience for Nixon.

The secondary is still thin although this fills the largest hole and is probably the best move the Packers made in the off season.

I think there is a lot of selection bias here because you only hear and connect your selected variables to successful players. How would you ever know the players who have intelligence and grit but don't make it?

Word is Oren Burks is very great in the head and heart but we never associate Burks with that because he sucks.

McKinney, Nixon, and Bullard all give us guys who can play over the slot. Bullard in particular has played there extensively.

Evan Williams has also played there some, and Anthony Johnson Jr. played a lot of CB in college, so those two could be serviceable at it as well.

Come to think of it, Carrington Valentine got a few reps there in 'camp last season and looked playable. We're fine at nickel/star.

I really hope that the Packers don't get bounced in the playoffs because all the "depth" you people think the Packers have in the defensive backfield is late round picks and UDFA's with UDFA skills and ability. But if they do, well I hope you understand the consequences then of what you endorse now.

The Packers sighed THE premier FA safety and then drafted the player many consider to be among the top two safety's in this year's draft. They also selected two more safety's in R4 & R5. They also have players to man the hybrid safety position in heavy packages as well as a 3rd safety option in Nixon.

Sure, there are later round picks and UDFA players filling backup roles but...what exactly is your expectation? High round picks as backups??

Geeze louise. So we are now at a point where we are so good that the next place to complain is our backups aren't premier draft picks?!

Good lord people. Just be happy. Just try it.

Hmmm... let's see:

CB

Jaire - R1
Stokes - R1
Nixon - UFA - re-signed
Valentine - R7
Ballentine - UFA - re-signed
King - R7

S

McKinney - UFA
Bullard - R2
Williams - R4
Oladapo - R5
Johnson - R7

Looks like some pretty substantial investments to me. Just because Nixon and Ballentine were not high draft picks doesn't mean the Packers didn't make a strong investment in them.

Safety was one of the two weakest position groups going into the offseason. They invested heavily in it through FA and the draft. Is the position solved? I doubt it, but it looks substantially improved (as does LB.) It's completely unrealistic to think that every group is just going to be stacked front to back. If that's your expectation, you'll never be happy. Of course you are @TheSkeptic
