Trade deadline approaching Nov. 5th

Post by salmar80 »

It's the time of the year, when the crickets usually play a marathon concert in Green Bay: Trade deadline. Moves have to be made before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

It's fun to dream, tho, so are there any moves you'd like for us to make?

GB currently has 12.6M in cap space, and don't really have ways to create a lot more as far as I can see. We will be pretty healthy cap-wise in 2025 when Bak's and Jones' dead cap disappears.

I think this season we are gonna stand pat. I'll never rule out a minor move made for a role player, depth or STs, but I can see no blockbuster trade happening.

I just like this roster. Young and growing together. All position groups have quality and depth. Isn't it relaxing not to have to drool over someone else's WR, for once?

We don't have many we could trade away either. Preston will likely get cut in the off-season, but trading him now saves no cap. If Doubs is super unhappy here, maybe, but replacing him would be super tough.

Pass rush has been a concern, but I think we'll roll with what we have, and bank on Gary and others raising their level as the season goes on and we face less running QBs that need to be contained.

Folks over on another forum are dreaming of getting after Maxx Crosby. I don't see it. The Raiders would be fools to give him up for anything but the king's ransom (no point in less, 'cause you'll have the use the resources you'd get to try to find another premium rusher, which is no gimme), and GB really can't afford even his 14.4M base salary for rest of the season.

I wish I could find the press conference video from Mike McCarthy talking about the trade deadline in GB.
He responds to a question about the imminent trade deadline from one of the reporters

MM wryly says he thought deadline was next week...they all laugh... and then he says "that's what trade deadline is like in Green Bay"

But for funsies:

Devil's advocate: Preston is either outta juice or a bad fit for this scheme. While good vs the run, his pass rushing has been even more anemic than Gary's, despite better sack numbers. His contract is such that there's no way we keep him next season. It's the last chance to get any compensation for him. Trading him now wouldn't save any cap, but it would open the door for Mosby, Cox or a trade target to show their wares.
Counter: You don't sacrifice depth at a premium position. LVN and Enagbare haven't unseated him yet. If Cox and Mosby were any good, we'd have found a way to get them snaps, they have none on D. We don't have cap room to trade for a rusher better than Preston, other than Myles Garrett.

Devil's advocate: Dillard is a vet that doesn't see the field, and likely never will. He's still at least 2 injuries away from playing (knock on wood). Some team in distress may offer more than he'd otherwise be worth.
Counter: He's a dirt cheap vet in a room full of youngsters. If injuries hit, playing a developmental rookie can fold the entire O.

Trading Preston makes no sense.

He’s the type of player we’d be looking to acquire, not sell, as we are hoping to compete this year.

But hey, if we sell him for a 3rd and go get Myles Garrett for like a 2nd and a 3rd, sign me the hell up.

Preston is gone after this season anyway and the most we get for him is a 6th round comp. Trade him now if someone offers more than a late 4th. Or maybe for a rookie Olineman on someone's PS.

Unfortunately Preston has been invisible. LVN and Enegabare are both outplaying him. And Cox would probably outplay him too. What did he have vs the Texans? Oh yeah an offsides penalty.

But there is 1 massive hole on the team, where even someone off another team's PS would be an upgrade. Long Snapper. Doesn't anyone have an undersized center that can convert to LS?

I would really like to see if anyone would come off a LB. Cooper is good but the rest of them all have their deficiencies.

I would also be completely ok trading Preston but it depends on the compensation which I don’t think would be much given his age and contract. Regardless you cut him in the off-season so is it worth keeping him now?
Cancelled by the forum elites.

If you feel like he can contribute to a championship run this year, yes.

Walkers has 70 tackles in 7 games, he's our MLB, both Wilson and Cooper are to light and get trucked, Walker maybe is to dense to get the green dot or mic, but he's more physical then the other two.

also Smith is 2nd on the team with sacks, contains the edge, and actually does get some pressure, he starts because no one has actually beaten him out, LVN, and Enagbare are no better

I'd keep Preston and dump Dillard. AR might take him.

I wonder if Tennessee would be willing to give up Harold Landry. $17.5M base salaries for 2025 & 2026. Would that move the needle on pass rush and would you prefer him to Preston Smith? Difficult to say, overall, but on pass rush reps, it's a no brainer.

Good find

OTC puts his valuation at $15.4M and his paycheck is commensurate with his production, so that's doable.

I think if you trade for Landry you still keep Preston for the rest of 2024. Hafley is really keen on keeping his guys fresh and they've had 5 DEs active on gameday since week 5.

I don't see them making any meaningful moves at this point. Trading any starters away at this point upsets the apple cart and doesn't put us in a better position to win this year. And that is what it's all about - winning THIS year.

Despite individual stats on the d-line, the defense is playing REALLY well. I hope injuries don't derail us on that side of the ball.

what about a CB? our pass rush is formidable when we need it to be, but we are suspect in coverage, NE has a old CB named Jones they may part with, just a thought.

Send Dillon off for a low choice and then get some D help from a fire sale franchise.

:nono: Can't trade players on IR, and since Dillon wasn't designated on the IR designated to return, he's on ice until he becomes a free agent.
