Playing without Jaire is not a death sentence. Good grief. Valentine isn't elite, but neither is he bad. More often than not, he actually has good coverage.

to be fair, Valentine has dealt with injury and suffered playing time most of the season, that could explain his unwillingness to form tackling, head up arms extended, haven't seen that all season, and looking at last years stats, he hasn't been the same player


Seven practices into camp, Valentine pulled a hamstring, sidelining him for two weeks and limiting him in practice until the start of the regular season. Then, as he was finally getting healthy, he injured his ankle in Week 2 against Indianapolis. He missed two games but remained on the injury report until Week 7.

this probably has more to do with 1st rounder Stokes draft status and combine score than actual on the field ability

didn't realize Valentine had been hurt, his terrible tackling attempts gave me the impression Stokes had the upper hand in that department, when ya look at last seasons stats, Valentine seems like a completely different play, till the Bears game, much better when healthy.

So the Forty-Niners are down their starting QB and a bunch of other really good players for Sunday's game.

They are currently 1-3 in their own Division, with 2 of those losses coming at home, and in last place.

After the game in the cold (for them) in Green Bay, they fly back to the West Coast and, checks schedule, fly even further to Buffalo next week to face an ascending 9-2 Bills team that will be coming off of a bye. Good luck with that.

They also still have to play the Lions who will no doubt be fired up after losing last season's NFC Championship game in SF.

The losing the Super Bowl curse is playing out in real time and I hope the Packers curb stomp the remnants of what has been our biggest nemesis on Sunday.

What are you on about? The only person who defends the Douglas trade, to my knowledge, is Lupe, who's not even a fan of the GM. Pretty much everyone else on this board regrets it...

Lupe is not the only one. I had no issue with the Douglas trade, and thought the return was good for a guy who is in reality a mediocre (66.1 on PFF) corner. The failure to adequately replace him is a separate issue, however.

I think it's completely fair to criticize Guty on this, tho I'd remind that he DID manage to fix the safeties and the slot in one fell swoop, so it's not like he ignored the secondary this off-season. The injuries of Jaire, the regression of Stokes and lack of leveling up by other have left the boundary weakish.

As evidenced by the Malik trade, Guty's not against trading for players when there's a need, so I suspect there were no good value trades for starting level corners available. I will never blame a GM for not doing desperation overpays for need. Our window is just creaking open, it's not all-in time yet.

Guty has the right perspective; short term pain for long term gain. He won't spend a 4th for a guy likely to only stay here a year. I agree with him.

I agree moves have weakened our cornerback position especially with Jaire being banged up but did you truly believe at the beginning of this season this was a Super Bowl caliber team? I felt we were a playoff team but we still have holes to fill to be able to win this division let alone the conference. We have defensive issues and are too inconsistent on offense to contend for a championship this year. I don't think we are too far away however.

Armchair QBing with hindsight as his crutch. It’s easy to quibble over what might have been and unfortunately some posters relish in it. It’s an easier game to play as a fan when you hedge your bets for coming up short, as 31 teams do every single year.

Any other roster? Really? I like our team and we have talent but I just don't feel we are a SB caliber team - yet. I was responding to Drj who suggested because we didn't address the cornerback position at the trade deadline that cost our SB chances, that's all.

This is not a rip on Jordan Love. It's just a strong opinion.

The Packers will go as far as he takes the team. The Packers team and defense I feel are better than last year. Love has not taken that next step yet to elite status. Statistically he hasn't even been very good compared to his peers.

The Packers were almost good enough to play in last years Super Bowl. If Love turns into Rodgers vs Falcons divisional playoffs 2010/11, we are in the Bowl. Just play better!!! We have seen it.

How many super bowls in the gute era?

This is another valid criticism. While Guty has a respectable 69-39-1 record in the regular season, with 4/6 of his seasons ending up in the playoffs, zero SB wins matters.

The previous push was done largely with players brought in by TT, so Guty's legacy (positive or negative) will depend on whether we win SBs with Love or not. We have a second SB window that's creaking open. This year we are likely too young and in midst of scheme change on D, but I won't count us out entirely. But next 2-3 years Guty needs to have this team stocked and rocking!

Which GMs would you prefer over Guty, @Drj820 ?

IMHO there is just one GM who is crystal clearly superior to Guty: Brett Veach, who is on a TEAR in KC (see stats at the bottom ) and has hogged SB wins in half of the seasons 2018-2023. He's frankly on pace to become the greatest GM of all time.

Other than him, there are a few debatable ones who have brought about consistent success, some with SB wins and some with none (Les Snead and Jason Licht have SBs, Brandon Beane, John Lynch and Eric DeCosta don't).

Overall, I think Guty has done a B or B- job so far. You only get an A for SBs. His 1st rounders haven't hit often enough, but he has some real gems in later rounds. And his free agent and trade record is pretty great.

Take care of business. A win basically knock SF out of the playoffs. To me that's a start to changing the tide against them. I hope we punch them in the throat and humiliate them but just start by playing clean complimentary football. Time to build to what we think this team can be
