You can try to develop him into a full time WR and risk that his hands and routes and precision don't improve enough to cut it.
Or you can make him a permanent gadget guy who is a bargain on a day two rookie contract for four years and then you likely don't re-sign him but he served his purpose for you.
I prefer the second path for this pick, if I'm honest. And I'm fine with that. Is that a better outcome for a 4th round pick than a 3rd? Sure. Yeah. But at the end of the day, you take a player because you have a vision for him. MLF can use this guy. So let's roll.

Deguara. Geez, so recent but that name seems as distant as Mike McCoy. Recall him in gameplay maybe five times, no injury to speak of. Overreach is an understatement, had pie-in-the-sky hopes for him at TE, FB, Wildcat…he amounted to less than zero for a very early 3rd rounder.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 23:01Reminds me of 2020 when LaFleur had a vision for Dillon and Deguara. This is why I believe Gutenbumst won’t ever get this team over the top. Like he has moments of brilliance and then somehow you just see the most atrocious decisions I can’t wrap my brain around by a man paid millions for a professional sports team to make.
Without even looking, is he even in the league any more? Practice squad? UFL? 2020 draft, goes to show the league moves at lightning pace. Makes you respect the ones who can get to 10 years and beyond with success.
I see Amari Rodgers is still bouncing around, UFL Birmingham Stallions. Check him out safely away from our roster!
This could be exactly the kind of guy that Love needs at this point in his career. Love is prone to going through phases where he struggles with accuracy. Having a big bodied guy with quickness to throw a bubble screen to might be just the solution to get him back in a rhythm on those off days.
Cowboy up.

At $55 million/yr, about $3.5 mil a game, there is no room or excuse for “off days.” There are no “off days.” When they stack up, they all go…Love, LaFleur and Gutekunst. Ed Policy is Carmen’s son, and there were no “off days” in San Fran for 15+ years. Making the playoffs and winning the division is basic math, this current crew counts it as an accomplishment and stepping stone to a contract extension. Policy needs to put an end to it, it is only the key to kicking the door down.Papa John wrote: ↑26 Apr 2025 00:55This could be exactly the kind of guy that Love needs at this point in his career. Not much polish when it comes to the intricacies of route running and the game, but man when he has the ball, he's big, he's fast, he cuts and changes direction with ease and really cool to watch.

I kind of get that feeling too, he's a specific guy they have a specific vision for in the offense, much like Dillon and Deguara were. That said, this guy seems to have a real special talent with the ball in his hands that neither of those guys had. When they picked D&D I could see the theory behind it kind of, but never really saw all the talent behind it. Dillon some, but never like Deguara at all.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 23:012020 when LaFleur had a vision for Dillon and Deguara. Williams on the other hand, I can see a whole lotta ways he can come up big on limited snaps as a rookie even just by putting the ball in his hands.
True. This offense needs another spark guy besides Josh Jacobs when nothing in the passing game gets going. Williams is a guy who can make something out of nothing from a basic bubble screen, etc.Papa John wrote: ↑26 Apr 2025 00:55This could be exactly the kind of guy that Love needs at this point in his career. I was also intrigued by drafting this guy but ultimately just thought he was too poor of a WR in the route running and catching departments. And ultimately that is your most important thing.
can't get the tush push banned, ya create a plan to copy it, these last 2 picks seemed destined to do that, Huge B gap blocker, big powerful runner who has experience taking direct snaps, seems like part of the plan drafting Belton and Williamslupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 23:01Reminds me of 2020 when LaFleur had a vision for Dillon and Deguara. we didn't draft Williams to be a receiver

I’m seeing the positive angle some of you are developing and I’m open to it.
I just hope Lafleur is ready to grow and be able to use all his tools in his bag in game. I feel he always comes out on script but for long lulls in many games he forgets his bag and just calls basic plays that make unique players do basic things
I hope he can grow to highlight his ponies with tricks throughout the 60 minute game and not just when he has time to plan it out through the week on script.
I’m thinking about forgetting about Kraft, resorting to multiple lame end arounds, etc
Lafleur can grow too tho

I don't think we saw limitations with Lafleur, rather we saw a decline with players that make the passing game work, poor blocking, dropped passes, and the loss of a key player Lafleur would obviously design schemes around in Watson, and every DC new what was coming when we lined Reed up off ball, adding a Guy like Williams adds not only deception, (who's the jet guy now) but also ability that forces a defense to honor it.Drj820 wrote: ↑26 Apr 2025 07:31I’m seeing the positive angle some of you are developing and I’m open to it.

remaking the OL with more powerful interior players has probably been the plan ever since we drafted Rhyan, and we are copying other teams using hybrid WR as RB's
You're preaching to the choir here. Reality is that the contract is done already. And contracts don't magically just make QB's more accurate. To this point in his career, he has struggled with accuracy. Not always. Not even most of the time. But he struggles enough that he could use a guy like Williams.WhiskeyIndigo wrote: ↑26 Apr 2025 02:39At $55 million/yr, about $3.5 mil a game, there is no room or excuse for “off days.” There are no “off days.” When they stack up, they all go…Love, LaFleur and Gutekunst. Dillon and Deguara are nothing compared to this guy. Different planet altogether. This guy is gonna be planned in for 3 touches a game. And watch to see the impact those can have. I'm jacked about him.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 23:01Reminds me of 2020 when LaFleur had a vision for Dillon and Deguara. I saw Luls in the offense where I thought McCarthy was calling plays. I didn't like this prospect when I first looked into him. This kind of player typically doesn't amount to anything at WR.
Then I talked myself into it a day before the draft.
In the context of our draft, where we were yet to add to our defense, I didn't love the pick as much as I loved my idea of it in a draft that assumed more help on defense.
But I think this could still pay off for us. MLF is the absolute right guy to make use of this player. Also, these types of receivers haven't worked out because they often go to teams that need urgent help at receiver, having to do a little if everything yet ending up not having any strength in which to hang their hat.
Our situation allows us to bring this guy along more patiently, doesn't have to be more than a part time role player in his first couple years in the league.

Labrev wrote: ↑24 Apr 2025 08:42I have been pretty disinterested in Savion Williams (TCU WR) for us, but now I'm thinking about it.... you put him in a full-time return specialist role on punts and kicks, and on offense have him focus on learning the vertical stuff, plus throw in a few gadget plays here and there? Dunno, maybe that could actually work with him.![]()
Then again, I am still of the mind that we do not need a WR1, just a guy who can open things up deep downfield and bring an X-factor, plus some return ability would be nice with Nixon moving away from that. And there is a dire lack of those guys in this draft, so you kind of have to make the best of what's available.

It's really a shame that Williams had such a disappointing pro career.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 21:39Cordarelle is the only comp that makes sense because he’s not a WR. Gutenbumst has never taken a single good WR and it’s not for a lack of trying. He has failed repeatedly here.

I genuinely love watching this guy run. He finishes like a dude. His vision in tight areas is so fun. I don't think we're a wildcat team because why take Jordan Love off the field, but some of his goal-to-go carries are super impressive how he decides whether to pick his way through the gaps or run through guys or jump over the top.
I think if we had drafted him knowing that our EDGE needs would in fact get filled and if we had a better CB, we'd all be a lot more excited about the possibilities this guy presents. But given the unfilled needs at the time, he felt like a bit of a luxury pick.

Pretty Cool.
When people asked me the week leading up to the draft if there was any team I could to go to which one would it be and I was like....Green Bay and so to then see the Area Code on Draft Day pop up was a very special moment.

Man crazy to me you call Williams just a gadget receiver. Not sure if he’ll pan out, but tons there and he definitely specializes in being a WR. He did more of the gadget stuff last year cause he’s also good at that and the rest of the team sucked Mslupedafiasco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2025 21:39Cordarelle is the only comp that makes sense because he’s not a WR. I’m going to write a report up but basically I get the Williams pick. I still don’t like him that much but it’s similar to my thoughts on Watson when we took him. The potential to have a 6’5 athletic freak and have him boom is worth the lottery pick. It didn’t work for Watson. Not because he got hurt so much either. He just wasn’t that good.BF004 wrote: ↑02 May 2025 18:37Man crazy to me you call Williams just a gadget receiver. My concerns with Savion is that he’s a 5th year senior and doesn’t look that great running routes, his release I don’t think is that great either, and the hands are obviously the most suspect thing. In fact I think he catches like Watson where it just looks awkward but is somehow effective.
