I somehow missed this in the shuffle. After that crap performance, game on the line, the Packers marched out 10 guys to try to block the game winning FG?

Yeah, several beat guys were pointing that out immediately following the game. It was the cherry-on-top of an absolutely abysmal ST overall performance. Just total incompetence.

That second tweet. Ugh.
The hand chop? Whatevs. Who the heck is #96? The left wing blocker? Dude didn’t even move until Ward was already by him. And when he did move, he completely ignored the inside rusher and went to block the outside rusher.
I mean, this stuff is basic ST101 level stuff. Yet here we are…

Pretty sure that is Tyler Lancaster, #95, not 96. Why was he on the outside, lined up too deep? Because he is a Dlineman and he does not know how to block. Why was he on the outside rather than in the middle?

Man, that sure looks like a 96 on his jersey. Yes, why in God's name is a DL in trying to block?!? What in the hell are DL doing in this situation in the first place?? I see Lowry is on the outside on the other side. Is this normal throughout the league? Defensive linemen are not trained to block, especially on the outside! IMO a coach's decision like that alone is grounds for dismissal.

I don't pay enough attention to other teams to give a great answer, but I do know the Packers have done it for years, decades even under multiple coaches. Lancaster has been on the FG Block team a lot.
I also google imaged other FG blocking units and saw a few images with a "90's" number on the end blocking.
So it's probably not conventional, but I would guess a number of teams have it.

It is Lancaster and it is normal to see DL guys in those situations. No, I don't have data to back that up.

I don't understand, with the as many OL as we and other teams have, why aren't guys like Jake Hansen out there instead of Lancaster? Seems like they'd be better at blocking, since, you know, that's what they do. Perhaps we've tried it and Lancaster was better in practice. Sad state of affairs.

My guess is a numbers thing. Jake Hansen wasn't even activated was he?
You usually active 4 to 5 Dlinemen and 7 to 8 Olinemen.
So you need 8 players minus the specialists on Field Goal block.
The top 5 starting Oline don't get those duties. The top 2 Dlinemen usually don't get those duties.
So now you have 8 spots to be filled which are likely filled by your last 3 Olinemen, two Dlinemen and some Tight Ends/linebackers.
I think the bigger thing is just being more comfortable with trotting out starting Olinemen to do more of these duties. (I think I have seen Turner out there before)

I'd agree with this if it's week 8...but this is the playoffs! Why
wouldn't you put your top blocking linemen out there in such a critical spot and KNOWING the ST had been struggling all year??

It would be interesting to see who exactly has been on punt block and FG block this year and how many games they were there.

I blame the loss on the creator of this GDT. Had there been more emphasis on Erin Andrews and less on the now obvious meaningless football thingys we wouldn't be in this mess...

its sad.
Many players on the Packers knew the STs could wreck their dreams. Everyone saw the coming implosion. You had guys like Lazard screaming "il help!" and the coaches seemed just shocked at the idea him helping. Wasnt there a report of Adams going to STs meetings to see what was going on?
Yet Lafleur seemed to not have any answers at all. He seemed like his answer was to cross his fingers and hope the snake didnt bite.
We all see obvious things that could have helped. Of course some starters can play on FG team in the playoffs. I never see an injury on that play from the offense. Its the playoffs. Nothing was more important than getting that FG before the half, and nothing was more important than blocking a FG at the end of the game. We had lancaster LARPing as a statue at the wing, and then 10 men on the field to block. Absolutely maddening and inexcusable and it falls on Lafleur who is the HEAD coach and ultimately responsible for everything that happens on that field.
On top of that, the one spot I wouldnt put a main contributor out there is KOR team where Dillon got hurt, why? Because we never return it past the 25 anyway! Thats the one spot I would just put the bottom 11 on the roster and roll with it and accept our medicine. There was nothing to gain from having Dillon out there, it hadnt mattered all year!
Check this article out, I will be tempted to share it in every thread (but i wont)
Tom Brady Attended Special Teams Meetings and Took Notes
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/rob- ... ook-notes/
I have trolled about firing Drayton at halftime, I am not kidding about this...Rodgers should have made a stink about it all year. He should have been in the meetings and even working on fixing the problem. It is not his "place", but its his legacy that was on the line. He is the one getting shredded this week (deservedly). Lafleur decided to cross his fingers and hope STs didnt bite in the playoffs, Rodgers shouldnt have accepted that as appropriate action for the problem.

I'm not the analyst, but it seems those Warner videos reveal 1) lots of patterns going downfield, taking time to develop and most of them were well covered, and 2) So many opportunities that Aaron didn't see or use, especially that last play that would've gotten us 30 yards or so.
Only bad words coming to mind.
Scheme blame to MLF and then Aaron just didn't stay within the offense.

Ward said that the 49ers special teams coach saw something in the scheme that they knew they would have an opportunity to block the kick.

And btw, the 49ers ST didn’t rate much better than the Packers this year but they still managed to perform, and even step up, when it mattered most. The Packers ST? Yeah, we all saw it.

Sounds like 2014 when Seattle said they had schemed up something if they saw Brad Jones (ugh) in a certain position, they knew they could run something special because he sucked ass.
