I just popped in here once again to re-assert that I cannot explain clearly enough how blatantly obvious it is to me that Sammy Watkins should be a Packer this year.

I know he'll probably get hurt at some point, because he does that. But good grief, he's the ideal fit right now.
I think Burks, London and Olave in the first, Williams, Pickens, Watson on Day 2. Doubs and Kyle Phillips on Day 3 are my favs.

For FA's I like Sammy Watkins and John Ross as our fliers the most in terms of price to potential upside with us.

Why do you like Sammy Watkins? He is a 400 yard per season WR with 3 total TD's over the last 2 seasons. He is an 8 year veteran and is basically a WR#3. Why do you think he has potential beyond what he has produced over the last 2 seasons?

I'm glad you asked.

Basically because he was injured last year. His start to the season, getting basically 4 catches for 60 yards per game, before injury, in a run-first offense with no other weapons, was solid. In KC, he was asked to do more dirty work. His role was not to get targets, but to support the focal points of the scheme, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. I posted recently a list of the #2 WRs in KC's offense over the years and it was closer to 500 yards more often than it was to 800 yards. Most of his career, he has been in run-first offenses or offenses that had other focal points, and he has been a role player.

Now, he isn't going to suddenly be an elite #1. But we need a guy who is a starting caliber outside receiver who is also willing to play an unselfish role. And we need a guy who knows how to run routes and who has the physical build to perform a variety of tasks.

His 4.33 speed is likely gone, sapped by some injury and time. But he's still a 4.4s guy, for sure.

So what we have here is a guy who is 28 years old. His past two seasons, he has underperformed due to injuries. If he were 32 and had two rough injury years, you think "this guy is done." But going into aged 29 season? Injuries mean he's cheap, not washed.

I asked my buddy who's a smart football fan and a Ravens fanatic what he thought of Sammy Watkins this year. His answer was "Very tough guy who was good at what he does that was injured all year. Mad respect."

I also looked for some analysis of what people were saying when he joined the Ravens last year. Given that the Ravens were an offensive mess this year, and that Watkins clearly wasn't the same guy when he returned from injury (and left the lineup again shortly after, indicating he rushed back), I wanted to see how he was viewed coming off of only one down year.

The quotes I saw from Watkins were exactly what I'd like to see. He blended the unselfish, play for each other and the team not for ourselves rhetoric with the "I'm ready to play somewhere where my role is less to open things up for others and more to catch the ball"

So he's a guy who is 6'1", 210ish pounds, played for MLF with the Rams in 2017, can run faster than most of our current receivers, understands the nature of role playing at WR but is hungry to go somewhere where he can receive more targets, runs pretty good routes, has some juice left, and is incredibly cheap because he's coming off of back-to-back years of being banged up enough to neuter his production.

I know he's a couple years older, but this is the kind of "he has the traits but has rarely been placed in a scheme to accentuate them" value that Campbell presented to us.

Size, budget, scheme fit and familiarity, athletic traits that still show up in his game, team-first guy. Why on earth WOULDN'T I want him?

I mean it's April Skeptic and we have no money's.

So that's the best we gonna get.

I guess I like his phyisicality, he's a pretty good route runner and he's a 4.4 guy so he is fast. He is old but I'd take him over an AJ Green.

Sammy Watkins isn't even old!

He's 6 months younger than Odell Beckham and Davante Adams.

He's a year younger than Robert Woods.

He's 5 years younger than AJ Green and Julio.

Just to name some guys who have been on the move or are free agents this season.

Actually, let's look at this:

Odell Beckham and Sammy Watkins over the past two seasons:

There's no reason to have any less confidence in Sammy Watkins being able to bounce back from less significant injuries than the one Odell is currently recovering from than to think Odell would.

I know we're not clamoring for Beckham on this board, given that he won't contribute until the back half of the season, but given that they are 6 months apart in age, I wanted to compare the perceptions of two oft-injured players coming in and contributing, where as most seem to assume Bechkam would help a team when healthy, Watkins is being grouped into the category of "older guys who might be washed"

This is my unrealistic (for a few reasons--mostly that I doubt we can get all 3 WRs and Jelani Woods in the draft without seriously neglecting every other position early--but also because I doubt we'd keep 7 WRs) ideal pass catching group this year. We can add in Tonyan as a pass-catching TE and Deguara as the FB/H-back/Utility TE, but those are pretty set so I didn't put it in

For much more realism, just drop Pierce out and have Burks be the inside/outside big slot/boundary guy, along with Lazard.

WR DeAnthony Thomas is looking at a return. I thought about putting him in my last mock as a guy who can be a return-specialist and occasional deep threat option on O, but I think I would rather have a proper boundary WR like Will Fuller than another smol target (he's like ~5'9/180ish).

starting to feel the board turn pessimistic about our chances to actually field a WR corps next year that resembles anything a super bowl contender in the modern era should trot out onto the field.

I feel fantastic about it. Just don't expect much to happen between now and The Draft and also don't really expect 3 WR's taken in the Top-50 or anything like that. I think, come September, we will be just fine.

ya sold me with your post 3 hours ago on Watkins, probably be the best 3 to 5 mil we could spend, some times the past is not a good prediction of the future, and Sammy is due for a break out year of sorts, I'd do this in a NY minute, Can't figure out why we havn't signed him yet, I was going to mention him a couple days ago with the Metcalf comments but it slipped my mind. :aok:

Don't let these turkey's rip out your tail feathers :rotf:

this is a solid WR class, and we'll take one of the top 4 or 5, and probably another with a 2nd rounder who may need some OJT but most need some of that no matter which slot there taken, I expect a up tick with Amari Rodgers, Cobb will be back, Lazard is a solid #3, and both RB's do well as receivers, specially Jones.

each year a half doz rook receivers start and do well, some are exceptional. and we have the coach and QB to imitate that success, I have faith in that course of action. :aok:

I don't get that sense at all. Not even close. I feel like you just wanted to make another very pessimistic post yourself .

Kind of a meh trade for me. Wouldn’t have hated it at that price but won’t lose sleep about not being in on that.

Yeah, I’ve never been a Parker fan.

Find it a little shocking the dolphins didn’t increase their quantity of picks given all the ones they gave up for Hill.

Not only that, but they lost picks this year.

Do they have any left at all?
