Here’s the deal about RBs…if they just run the ball…yes they are expendable

If they run the ball and pass block well, they set themselves apart and are a little harder to replace.

But if they run the ball, pass block, and they are a weapon in the pass game…then they have a lot of value.

Because at that point you aren’t paying a “running back”, you are paying a playmaker. And playmakers aren’t so easy to find.

Running backs that can be pass catchers and get YAC are not easily replaced
Sure they can. Jerick McKinnon is 30 and made less than 1M as a pass catching specialist. Anytime you pay a RB and draft one highly you are making a mistake. We did both.
i once took a shower with jerrick mcKinnon so i will never hate on him, but he was a specialist that got paid to play a certain role. Thrilled for him and his ring though. But hes not exactly your every down swiss army knife at this point in his career.

And the niners gave him a good check for his versatility

Oh whoops

There were open OTAs today

Tweets seem to indicate that Romeo Doubs is real good, Wyatt is back practicing and penetrating, Luke Musgrave is smooth but maybe dropped a ball, that Bakh is doing team drills again, and that Moore is a guy to watch in the safety competition

Yeah, too lazy to post the tweets, just go scroll through Andy Herman's timeline (something something blogger, something something ink salesman).

No, that's Owens. Sounds like Owens and Moore are typically the 2s, but Moore was rotating in with the 1st next to Savage along with Ford.

He was always a prospect on the cusp with the 49ers. He seemed to suffer when Saleh left even though Ryans was well respected. I would put my money on him over Ford.

I have such a hard time stacking these guys.

There's their safety ability, which probably goes something like: Savage, Ford/Moore, Owens, Johnson Jr, Gaines, Leavitt.
Then there's their ST ability which probably goes something like: Leavitt, Gaines, Moore, Ford, Owens, Johnson Jr., Savage.
Plus Johnson Jr being a promising rookie who you want to keep hold of.

And we're likely cutting 2/3 of these guys.

Going to be fascinating to watch the competition. And scary/intriguing/interesting/perhaps surprising(?) to see them play this season.

I am a big Moore guy as well, although I'm not sure what role to put him in.

Tbh, when we signed him, I liked the idea of Moore at FS with Ford at SS and just playing Savage near the 'line full-time, but it seems like we will be sticking with Savage at FS. But with every defense living in two-high shell, I'm not sure the FS/SS distinction really even matters anymore.

To be perfectly honest, I just don't understand what it is that Savage can/can't do.

Like people say he plays best when he's at the line of scrimmage and allowed to use his instincts to make plays without having to think too much.

But people also say that he's got the physical talent but not the instincts.

And he's good playing closer to the line where he can mix it up, but is a bad tackler?

And he's fast enough to cover the whole back end of the field but doesn't have the instincts to use that range as a deep safety?

Everything I know/read/hear about him seems to be contradictory at best, and fully paradoxical at worst.

But I do know that he showed flashes as a rookie and was actually pretty good as a sophomore. And that should mean there's a role for him, somewhere, and our coaches need to figure out exactly what it is.

I think it was Pettines first year, Savages 2nd season, as you said sophomore season, actually last 10 or so games, my impression is that Petine used more cover two zone, and 2 high, I think Savage does have instinct issues as a single FS, who do I support slow decision making

I'd like to see more cover two, or 2 high, with man on the boundary, let these safety's attack, jump routes, we have two ILB's with coverage skills, lets turn these safety's lose, nice to have competition at safety, now that Amos is departed.

To me Savage can’t play safety because he can’t be that bad of a tackler and the last line of defense. I thought even when he had his “good” season he was just a really bad tackler.

Put him in the nickel and I think you have a fast weapon where he can play more coverage. He’s a bad tackler for a safety but not so bad for a nickel CB. Send him off the edge to blitz or attack the back sides of runs and he can have an impact.

If he’s left in the backend as a FS he is going to blow a lot of big plays because he lacks the willingness to tackle one on one despite all his speed. At least there’s a better chance to rally in the nickel.

Doubs looked incredible last year too. And he was good but dealt with that injury that slowed him down. Plus Rodgers wanting to have bad vets on the field and LaFleur being a weak man caving to it.

I will say with Doubs he needs to improve his ability to get off the line and beat press. Defenders who got into him really slowed him up and made things difficult.

MLF did describe him as "more violent" in his routes, cuts, and steps so that seems to relate nicely to one aspect of that, at least.

I’m just saying Alexander isn’t there. Douglas isn’t there. Stokes isn’t there even though he’s pretty bad. They’re running routes in shorts against bums.

Oh sure. It's June; nothing matters. Just following the storylines and updating on what's being said.

What may matter is the Bears were the 32nd ranked defense in 2022. If that carries over to the opener on September 10th in Chicago it may not matter who is our #WR and #1 QB. Last season the home opener vs. Da Bears was over at halftime.

Jerrick was on the team when I was a grad assistant for Georgia southern football. The shower was a massive shower with about 30 shower heads. Head coach Jeff monken would not allow anyone in a meeting that had been out at practice without a shower. He used to come in the locker room and scream at the players to, and I quote, “wash you a****!!!”

So from time to time I showered with jerrick and other players on our way to meetings. Jerrick was a very nice guy. Former cowboy JJ Wilcox was on those teams too. We won the SOCON conference twice and all have the same championship rings.

For three years in a row we made it to FCS semi final and lost to North Dakota state. They were dream snatchers.
