Not terribly excited for this signing.

Don’t know what happened to Smith the past couple years but he’s not the same player the “former Pro-Bowl” headline implies. He just seems to have aged really fast. Maybe it’s the old knee injury? Maybe, as some fans suggest, it’s more focus on his brand and less on his craft? Whatever the case, I don’t think he’ll have much impact. Yeah, he’s probably better than Summers so there that, just not much better.

If he is above average in coverage, the D can be schemed around him.

If his release was about losing a step, why didn't Dallas release him a month ago?

They were 1) waiting on their LB corps to get healthy and 2) making sure their young up-and-comers were capable. At least that's what I've read in fan forums/team coverage sites.

he had 155 tackles and 5 pds last year, we got him for roughly the vet min. Dallas went for BPA which was easily Parsons, and also have Vander lesh and Keanu Neal, you must have also read that Smith had a 9.2 mil. injury clause contract with Dallas for 2022, and Dallas didn't want to get stuck paying 5that if Smith got hurt this year, Dallas let Smith go because of the money issue just as much as decline in play, this is like a Xmas present, Smith will be our #2 ilb before he even steps on the field

I think Packer fans that are against this/not excited will regret not being jacked for this. Players like Jaylon do not drop out of trees. Jaylon's problem is not that he is a bad player, it is that he didn't understand a lot of the schemes. Watching the film and he doesn't fill some of the holes quick enough because he hesitates. He has the lateral speed, is a physical freakshow, and will make our defense better day 1. Watch for the breakout, because it will come if the coaches can help him out a bit.

I am usually apprehensive about pickups/trades like this, but not on this one. We got a gem that will help solidify out D.

The one thing I will really give credit to Gute about is when he has an opportunity to get a player marginally better than what we already have, he takes that opportunity. I do like that.

The only thing I can really complain about Gute in 2021 so far is the amount of money they gave Kevin King. When seeing the market for other CBs I'd honestly rather have, the money we gave King makes zero sense unless the Packers truly found that Norman, Heyward etc. just absolutely said no to playing in Green Bay.

Which could be the case.

Isn't it crazy how our ILB room has gone from what it was in April 2021 to what it is now?!

I mean this group is transforming from a, scheme around this weakness to scheme around this strength. I am so happy we don't see Henry Black on the field anymore. And it is in part because we have a DC who is embracing the ILB and we are getting more and more ILBs that are worthy of being out there.

What I am curious about is will this mean Summers is no longer active and we ask either Barnes or Smith to play STs? Or does this mean that Burks will take Rivers role and Chauncy no longer plays.

didn't know that Black played the hybrid lber spot, and only saw him play safety several times, he's been a quality ST performer.

Barry is known as a very good lber coach, he has Campbell playing better then he ever has, same with Burks, I'am sure he'll have Smith up to speed pretty quickly.

we've used 3 ilb, one ilb and 2 ILB, same with safety's, if anything, Barry has shown a lot of diff. packages, what I want to see is more blitzing and interior stunts rushing these lbers.

I was referring to how much more we play nickel compared to dime packages (like Pettine loved to do) which is completely the opposite of what we did last year. I am glad we have taken away the extra DB. I like it that we have LBs playing the LB role rather than Safety playing the LB role.

Do we have to release someone to get him? What is our current roster number? I've lost track. If he still has speed I like it but otherwise I still like Barnes' potential.

I dont really think he moves well enough to be as good as some of yal seem to think he may be in coverage. His body is breaking down, but he hits hard. And this defense could always use some more thumpers. I do not know who is better whether that is a healthy Barnes or Jaylon, but A) I am very confident Jaylon is better than our ILB3, and B) Barnes is hurt alot..so its good to have a competent replacement.

Even if this doesnt work out, I am excited we are trying and give credit to Gute for trying.

I think we were at 52 before MVS to IR, so the corner and Smith should make 53.

BTW, the corner we got has played a lot of games and I think is a bit of an underrated signing this time of year in its own right.

Neither former pro-bolwers like Gilmore, but very happy we are not sitting on Josh Jackson and Ka'Dar Hollman at this point. Give Gute credit for not just sitting on draft picks who flat out aren't working out.

Just a reminder that Falcons fans were pleased to be rid of De'Vondre Campbell, as well

Changes of scenery and schemery really can matter

Yeah, kind of screwed the pooch on Kirksey for Pettine, but so far Gute batting 1.000 on getting ILB's for Barry. Be amazing if Smith can ball out at above average level next to Campbell in this D.

Plus I believe Campbell has played 100% of defensive snaps so far (likely not sustainable), Barnes already hurt. Likely gunna be snaps to go around for all.

If he can keep Summers and Burks on the bench, this is a big win.

Yeah, also Barry is a former ILB coach and consistently throughout his career his ILBs have played above their reputation for him, so maybe it's scheme-friendly, or maybe he has some magic sauce, but guys tend to play better for him than otherwise at this position.

yep, tried to convince fans here that that was probably why Hayward and Hyde excelled after leaving here, also we saw that happen for us with Woodson years back, players are just like any of us, who doesn't try harder for a new boss?

Sounds like Chauncy Rivers got hurt in practice yesterday and is likely out for the year, so no roster space needed other than to shift Rivers to IR.
