The Way a Packers Forum Should Be

We have to remember Pettine was already here when MLF was hired and probably stayed because of familiarity and a young HC. Now Matt can choose his own guy. It will be interesting to see who he gets.salmar80 wrote: ↑29 Jan 2021 19:00Can we conclude LaFleur is demanding excellence?
That he's not happy with an outstanding 2-year record without SB wins says this is one hungry, hungry, ravenous head coach. Not keeping two top coordinators out of three with this kind of win-loss record may be unprecedented.
Also, this is the first time I remember a coordinator gone without most of the fans asking them to get fired. Wow.
LaFleur is rolling the dice, but hard not to trust him at this point.
I was thinking this myself. Any position coach looking to become a DC with HC aspirations should be looking here. We should be able to get the best prospective guy to be our DC.Yoop wrote: ↑30 Jan 2021 06:49good article, Lafluer should have DC prospects beating his door down to inherit a squad like this.

It's already the end of Jan. and now with all these coaching changes this is going to be a short off season, with lots of Packers news, to bad we may not have a combine again, but I think we'll have off season mini camps and OTA's.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑30 Jan 2021 07:17I was thinking this myself. What's strange about the Pettine era though is it seemed like he was the savior. I mean our talent on defense was garbage in 2018 and yet I would honestly say that Pettine got more from his unit in 2018 than what the FO gave him.Scott4Pack wrote: ↑30 Jan 2021 09:57When Pettine came onboard, I had my hopes that he would take that stale defense that Capers had made and turn it into something very dynamic. That never happened.
So, now MLF leads the team with an offense that is deceptive in so many ways. And it uses motion to lull defenses into familiarity, before it becomes the knife that is used against the defense. Is MLF going to expect anything less dynamic from his DC? That is why, I’d say, that MLF wants a new DC. Pettine never became that.
We want something more than a “bend but don’t break, give ‘em only a FG and out score them” type of defense. We want schemes that promote confusion by the offense and more than 1 turnover a game. They have to do more than run an occasional stunt or blitz in an unexpected way.
Yeah. The one challenge I see with the Saleh tree is the 49ers already likely got the best Saleh understudy.
That's a good point.go pak go wrote: ↑30 Jan 2021 10:53Yeah. The one challenge I see with the Saleh tree is the 49ers already likely got the best Saleh understudy.
The other thing about the Saleh tree is I am guessing Saleh would have gotten first pick from any of his 49ers coaches if he wanted them.
What wouldn't surprise me if the pick is a Saleh tree but a longer tree such as a coach who worked with Saleh before SF and not necessarily a SF coach. Similar to Saleh himself picking Ulbrich to be his D coordinator even though he wasn't a 49er.
I really wonder how much the switch from the booth to the field made. Pettine was very aggressive when he had less to work with, watching from up high. But when he got out of the booth and had the sideline perspective with better players he went soft too often.go pak go wrote: ↑30 Jan 2021 10:18What's strange about the Pettine era though is it seemed like he was the savior. The challenge was in 2019 and Pettine admitted to it that our resources going to defense put more pressure on him and again honestly....first few weeks of 2019 it really looked like we had something.
Just never got that defense over the edge. We were absolutely rated top 10 in yards defense in 2020. I don't know if we truly were or not because our offense was so successful at keeping the ball and letting the defense rest on the sidelines. I would argue our 2019 defense was better even if it meant our macro stats when compared to the league was worse because our defense actually won us a lot of games in 2019. They did not do that in 2020.
Only game I would say the defense won for us was maybe the Carolina game where they produced at a time our offense stalled. Could also put Jax in that category though those two teams aren't much to brag about.
