I have no problem resigning Jones. I’m fact I would have done so myself but that’s because I wouldn’t have drafted Dillon. The minute we took Dillon we needed to commit to him. You can’t take a RB in the 2nd round and just leave him as a backup. That’s terrible value. Sometimes you got to let a player go if there’s a replacement in line. See the QB situation.
I hear what you are saying. But I don’t agree with it. You can draft any position at a high or low round (add in the UDFAs too) and add value by anticipating that he might only become a legitimate backup. There are too many uncertainties in talent acquisition. Sure, you always want to hope that a 2nd round pick would become a starter. But there are too many picks, up to the first pick of the entire draft, that don’t work out.

The bottom line is that if a player jumps off the board at you when it’s your turn to pick, you pick that player and trust your system. (Or, trust your system and then pick that player.) I do think that Dillon “popped” for Guty when he had the pick. So, even with AJ in your lineup, you pick Dillon.

On a different note, too many GMs and HCs are uttering the “you need more than one RB” quotation. You hear it every day in the NFL. That would be another reason that you pick a guy like Dillon in Rd 2, even while you fully hope to keep AJ.

First off, excellent post above.

Secondarily, Dillon was the 62nd player taken - which means if he's tabbed 3 picks later he's a 3rd rounder and the anti-Dillonites don't have much else in their quiver.

I also don't worry about the "starters" label in the modern NFL. Snaps counts matter more than an arbitrary designation.
Jones played 630 snaps on offense ( 57 %) and Dillon played 537 snaps ( 49 % ) That's pretty similar

As MLF said - they are 1A and 1B in his view and the snap counts reflect that

Yup.

I’ll add still one more thought to my post. If we follow the philosophy that you don’t draft a “starting” RB if you plan to keep the other, then you also shouldn’t pick a backup QB (Love in this case) as long as you hope that Rodgers stays in town. Other positions too. Just saying…

Also, there’s just no way we should keep two Kickers. Even on practice squad. Heck, if you plan to keep your kicker…
