Local Eats

Cheesy topics (like the Cheese Curds thread) go here. Topics that aren't Packer related will be moved here as well.

Mmmm.... cheese.

Local Eats

Post by Trudge »

So...living back up north for the time being...decided to give the Suffolk Street Eatery and this time...holy crap. Got the French Dip and it did not disappoint. Meat just so tender and they did not forget the cheese.

There's been quite a few of these places I've been meaning to hit. Got a list right here. Been to most, but still some stragglers out there.

Every time I make it to North Philly, I skip the cheese steak joints and find me a DiNic’s for one of their Roasted Pork sandwiches. So juicy, so flavorful, so friggin’ good.

When I went to Philly, I was there for like 2 days and I made it a point to eat nothing but cheesesteaks, literally. I tried several different restaurants. The 2 famous ones (I forget their names, I think Pat's and Geno's) were actually the worst. I haven't visited a ton of cities, but of the ones I have visited, I rank Philly below average. The chick on the plane next to me put it best, when I told her that my only knowledge of Philly was from the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and she replied "yeah that's pretty much it". Then I proceeded to get berated by my driver upon landing. And it was like 20 degrees. And all of the churches had gay flags. Some of the historical stuff was cool though.

The best city is New Orleans. For food and really everything.

When I went to Salt Lake City, everyone kept recommending some Mexican restaurant, to which I rolled my eyes being from Texas (like Utah is going to have better Mexican food...). Sure enough when we tried it, it was okay but nothing to write home about. I make it a point to ask about the local cuisine whenever I visit a city, and they also kept mentioning funeral potatoes, which is just hash brown casserole by another name.

For local restaurants, I'm not really a foodie, but in Austin there is a food truck called Super Burrito and they have a taco called the sea monster taco which is really unique and good. In Houston, I would say Truth BBQ and Turkey Leg Hut are the ones, although I have never had the latter. Dallas, I'm not really sure what is best (honestly the 4 seasons restaurant is the best meal I've ever had, probably, but that's not really in the spirit of "local eats"). Waco's iconic restaurant is definitely George's, and maybe Health Camp (also never tried it). I have been meaning to try the new #1 ranked Texas BBQ restaurant in Ft Worth when I'm up there, called Goldee's. Texas BBQ has its own subculture and it was big news that this new upstart dethroned some Texas BBQ royalty in the latest rankings.

My friend said that he actually had some really good Mexican food in Salt Lake and that the cuisine in Salt Lake is generally very underrated. He is from Los Angeles, so he knows his Mexican food. Though I have heard that Mexican food in TX is different from CA.

They said Utah mexican food is different from Texas, when I was there. I agreed that it was different (it was worse, although still decent enough). Seems like it's moreso stuff like mole and poblano peppers, whereas Texas is moreso Tex-mex
