Packers Defensive Scheme - Film vs MN
Good video. Our players are just not showing they want to be physical and I don't know why that is.

So he was fired up by the fire Pettine talk? Sounds like he had an agenda and went and cherry picked 3 plays that fit that agenda. No one has ever said that everything Pettine does is schematically wrong, not even close. No one ever said that it wasn't gap sound. It is. Also no one said that players aren't at fault either. They are. When every players' play drops off, that then points higher up. There are many other things that are questionable. Splitting Smith out with a TE. Not playing M. Adams more than 6 snaps. OLBs playing undisciplined on the edge. Consistently soft zones.
We saw all this the first few drives last night, then it all changed and we stymied the JV 49ers.

I don't know if our players are not being physical here. It looks to me the guys we have in there just cannot get the job done. In the short yardage play MN's OL is pushing our DL 5 yards down before Cook gets the handoff. Lowry is not the answer nor is Jackson in the very next play. It is disheartening to see this in detail. We just don't have the horses, especially on the DL. Games are won in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Our OL is good enough most of the time but not on the other side. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken droppings.
as the guy said, players need to quit being so tentative and just play, great comment concerning Savage simply hesitating instead of crashing into that gap and making the tackle, also Pettine schemed a free lber on two plays here but because Martin and Barnes where a tad slow they where not able to stop the runner in the backfield, to often we see DL blown off the los.
thing is, right now you can look at most defenses and they mimick what we see from ours, inconsistent play seems to be the norm this year, specially so with defense.

Yup. You and I have had this argument a lot and you are not wrong. Before this year, you would talk about the advantage offenses have and it's harder for defenses. This year we are seeing offenses perform even better.
But that is irrelevant when we see we are 20th in the league in points allowed. Yes overall points may be up. But 19 teams are still better than us. We are in the bottom 10 of the league. So it is still a team problem more than a league problem.
true, we need to play better and that includes coaching better, when I looked at the defensive rankings a week or two back, 20 plus teams where bunched together, not saying we should be satisfied, however our # 2 CB has been out 4 weeks, we have near rookies at both ILB spots, Clark was out a few games, Savage gets lost in space, not sure what people expect of a DC, like I said a week ago, Pettine can't come down and play for these guys, Prestine Smith was dominated for 60 minutes by a TE, so I'am thinking thats on P Smith.go pak go wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020 14:43Yup. not so much defending Pettine here, as I said I'am fine with switching DC if we don't see improvement as the season progresses, however think about this, only Clark seems able to with stand a double team part of the time, the others are road kill, how can you fire a DC when they can't stop the run and you've got two thumb suckers at ILB?
If Clark can handle double teams, then we would expect our defense to have improved with him in the lineup because he is taking attention away from others.
It hasn't. Our defense has not been better with Kenny Clark.
But I agree with you. We still have 8 games left to right the ship. It is up to the players we are paying to make that jump. If your stars stink, your unit will stink.
We have the talent. They just need to put it together.

........ the talent? On paper yes, but I think as long as #37 is out there .......... it will mostly be a matter of winning shoot outs. I hope I am wrong. Luckily our schedule is pretty easy. Assuming the offense stays healthy our only question mark game left is versus the Titans on December 27th. 13-3 and even 14-2 is within reach. Hopefully our Special Teams #10 ranking will persist.go pak go wrote: ↑07 Nov 2020 20:50If Clark can handle double teams, then we would expect our defense to have improved with him in the lineup because he is taking attention away from others.

I think the Colts and Bears are very good teams. And I think the Panthers can also give us trouble.RingoCStarrQB wrote: ↑08 Nov 2020 09:15........ the talent? But according to you, our worries will disappear once King replaces Jackson anyways. So we should be good to go in a few weeks.
thanks, I think this points out how youthful we are at ILB, and how they still are learning to trust there instincts, both have showed excellent ability just havn't quite put it all together yet, need to keep those hands free, and shed or avoid the blocks, hopefully both have a bright future.
as this guy said, Clark hasn't looked 100% all season, lis, players often don't play exactly the same year after year and for a variety of reasons.
the more I see of Josh Jackson, and this slow arrival (if ever) of Darnell Savage makes me think we should have turned Jackson into a safety right after the draft and used the 21 slot we used on Savage for maybe a DT, WR, ILB, but this is just a feeling I've had a long time, saying that though, I think Savage will eventually arrive, Jackson is a great example that tackling is a learned trait, his combo bio says weak tackler, sure doesn't look like it much now, I love to see a guy wrap up versus so much of the whimpy bump and bounce off so popular now.
we need another two gapping run stuffing tackle, tired of these sub 300lb gap shooters that get thrown around like rag dolls, if I have any one complaint with Pettine it's his pholosphy defending the run, Maybe it's Montgomery the DL coach, isn't he a holdover from the Capers regime, whatever, it ain't been working very well, I seriously went into cardiac arrest when people bragged up Gary's run stopping ability, or that z's couple good plays out of dozens at 3 tech meant he was a run stopping dinamo to, opposing OL coaches where probably in stitches like I was WHERES THE BEEF
last year one of the best pressure groups in the league, so what do the best offenses do against us, run the ball, guess no one of importance saw that coming, imo, they should have, specially when that is now what we ourselves are doing, more running seems to be in vogue, why wouldn't we switch from nascar DL to more like a dump truck, ahhh we can second guess the thinking of Gute and the coaches forever, wont change anything, we need to make what we have work better, on that we all probably agree.
sorry to rant, I just needed to unload a bit.
>"We're not BAD. We're mediocre! Watch..."
Semantics, and missing the point: we have invested too much talent (and HAVE the talent) on that side of the ball for it to be this underwhelming (or whatever you want to call it). And, as he admits on various occasions in the video, it's reflective of coaching.

I wouldn't expect anything less.
I found it very strange that we have beef but didn't activate Billy Winn who has actually been efective when playing this year.
Last Sunday was the perfect game for Winn.
