General Packers News 2020

Yeah I have heard the NFL is expecting about a 15% hit in net income hit.
It is also worth pointing out how all sports are seeing significant declines in viewership in 2020. Like it's really bad. Too early to know why yet but if this trend continues into 2021, that will start to change the match on the value of these leagues.

On the plus side, live sports brings together huge audiences - so from an advertising point of view, they have a very attractive product.
On the minus side- they have an ad-based model which requires that they show an absurd amount of ads, constantly interrupt the game and it takes 20 minutes of real time to complete 2 minutes of action. That makes for a crappy viewing experience
In the past, the major networks had full rights to everything, total monopoly . But now there are other entertainment providers and some of them are a commercial- free experience. Some fans now consume sports in short bursts via twitter, internet, reddit etc.
( the rise of fantasy football is a part of that)
The ad-based product sucks in comparison and you can get all of the highlights you want shortly after they happen. So for a casual fan - that's the way to go and there's more of them than there are of us. The 3 hour broadcast is the bedrock of the NFL revenue model, but it's a bit of a dinosaur

Oh, they know. It's a convergence of many things: intense political cycle, glut of sports, cord cutting, upended schedules, and pandemic life changes.

Yup. And if you can't figure out how to monetize from the casual fan, both from the league and from the networks, you're in real trouble.BSA wrote: ↑16 Oct 2020 22:49On the plus side, live sports brings together huge audiences - so from an advertising point of view, they have a very attractive product.

NBC and FOX signed a HUUUUUGGGGEEEE TV deal back in 2014 to go for 10 years (2014 - 2024) with NASCAR with a price tag of $4.4 billion. ESPN saw the writing on the wall and ran away as fast as they could. But remember, in the mid to late 2000's, NASCAR was the 2nd most watch sport in the country. It was eyeing the NFL for being Number 1. It was a really, really big deal for about 10 years.
That TV deal ended up being a colossal failure for the networks and is the only thing keeping NASCAR on life support. NASCAR is literally changing their whole business model by having cheaper cars starting in 2022 because they know their revenue is going to plummet.
NBC and FOX can't screw up like that again. The cost of missing out on the country's biggest eye ball magnet is huge and deadly for them, but over paying 4 times what they can afford is also deadly.
Casual fans pay the bills. They have to figure out how to monetize on the new way fans and people consume sports.

So would if these temporary changes in habit become permanent for people? Would if people start getting used to not needing to watch these sporting events? I think these are valid and real concerns.Pckfn23 wrote: ↑16 Oct 2020 23:46go pak go wrote: ↑16 Oct 2020 20:09Yeah I have heard the NFL is expecting about a 15% hit in net income hit.

I would tend to think the glut of sports is the largest reason for the decline. When people think NBA Finals or the Kentucky Derby, they think of May. They don't think of October and September. So I get that and that has a chance to improve next year.
But I don't think cord cutting is much of a reason (NFL only has one game a week on non-free TV) and if it is, they better get creative on getting these people back through deals with Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney Plus etc. As for the politics, I always think no way can people not watch a game they love over politics...yet we have even members of our forum who only post in the Non football section of this place now.
Owners and commissioners have picked a side, and it's not with the fans. Sure, theirs's way too much sports on TV, but football is a weekend game.go pak go wrote: ↑17 Oct 2020 06:46So would if these temporary changes in habit become permanent for people? Cord cutting doesn't prevent people from watching games. Covid should help with viewership with more people staying inside. Being told you're a racist every time you put a game on is quite a turnoff.

Some of it is becoming permanent, the cord cutting being one we have seen increase over the years. If you cut the cord and then don't subscribe to Youtube Live, Hulu Live, or get an antenna, you can't watch. Then people get used to not watching. Definitely an issue that sports needs to resolve.go pak go wrote: ↑17 Oct 2020 06:46So would if these temporary changes in habit become permanent for people? As for politics interfering, it has in each presidential election year for the last 24 years. As you say, there are some who's politics dominate their lives.
I personally forgot baseball playoffs were still going on, let alone the NBA finals. Way out of my routine.

Move a couple of guys up or down, but other than that, if you draw a line under Corey Linsley... it's kind of hard to disagree.

I definitely disagree. You can’t be one of the better running teams in the league and be conferred finesse. They struggled yesterday in the run game because of stupidity and not sticking with it.NCF wrote: ↑19 Oct 2020 10:41Move a couple of guys up or down, but other than that, if you draw a line under Corey Linsley... it's kind of hard to disagree.

Cancelled by the forum elites.
Sorry, not that part. I was speaking more to the roster and the lack of a middle class.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑19 Oct 2020 10:48I definitely disagree. I seem to recall our forum coming to a similar conclusion during this year's Rank-the-Roster.NCF wrote: ↑19 Oct 2020 10:51Sorry, not that part. $%@# that, finesse, no. This is a tired take that needs updating. This guy is just recycling an old narrative without actually watching team.NCF wrote: ↑19 Oct 2020 10:41Move a couple of guys up or down, but other than that, if you draw a line under Corey Linsley... it's kind of hard to disagree.

As for no middle class?
Lazard
Gary
Sullivan
Greene
Williams
Lancaster
Keke
Turner
Barnes
Tonyan
Ervin
I don't buy it one bit.

Like some really really good options when you are getting like Kevin Kings and Linsley's going lower that maybe they should given some top end talent, but then it just dropped to like, maybe a few low end caliber guys can progress out of nowhere, like your Lazard's, Tonyan's, MVS's, Lancaster's, Hollman's, Redmond's, Green's, Ervin's of the world.
Some of those guys started out hot, some of those guys did not, and quite a few more not named no longer on the roster.
Probably the dumbest and laziest tweet written on the year so far.
Such a dumb, dumb tweet.
Literally the Tuesday after ATL.
"The Packers are so deep! Top two WR options are out and here is the Packers showing their strength of depth with Tonyan and Aaron Jones. The RBs and tight ends carry the offense with the top two WRs out of the game. The offensive line keeps producing no matter who is playing the game"
You get my point.
This team's middle of the roster is very, very good.
The Packers lost yesterday BECAUSE of the stars sucking. Rodgers threw the pick 6. Bakhtiari let JPP at Rodgers or didn't make the moves to block the outside blitzes. Linsley didn't get to White on the 2nd level. D Adams bobbled the INT. Jaire Alexander allowed the biggest pass play in completeion yards. The Smiths were invisible. Clark was nowhere. Aaron Jones did jack squat.
Don't be telling me this bullsh*t that the Packers middle of the roster is lacking when the players who legit got the game balls were Krys Banres, Montravious Adams and Jamaal Williams.
God lord.
I get so sick of fans and media coddling and protecting star players.

Any news about Bak yet?
You really don't see a drop off? Here is our Top-25 from RTR. I moved up the guys I would consider solid, middle-class. That group is not big enough. The others are either rookies who have not yet ascended or guys who you really would have expected to by now, yet haven't, and others that you just know never will.

I mean. When I look at that list, I am far more disappointed by the lack of production from the top 12 tier than anything else.
Adams and Clark lacked production due to injury but also did nothing to help us win when they came back.
By and large our Smith boys are dragging the team down the most for the season overall. And yesterday was lost primarily because the top players on offense did nothing. Rodgers was soooooooo bad after the first quarter.
Hard to win a game when the offense scores 10 points and effectively the Bucs defense scores 14 points.

I am not linking what we thought and what in actuality is the middle class of our team. I don't believe we are lacking in the middle of our roster. I would like guys like Savage, Kirksey, Wagner, and Lowry to step up more, but I don't see that as overly taxing to the overall play of our team, especially with Barnes, Turner, and Keke/Adams stepping up. Savage hurts the most.NCF wrote: ↑19 Oct 2020 12:45You really don't see a drop off? Here is our Top-25 from RTR. I moved up the guys I would consider solid, middle-class.
