Wyatt is a better player right now for me, as well.

Walker has a high ceiling, but is still developing and has a history of developing slowly. I think he also has a lower floor.

I'm still concerned about Wyatt off the field. The pattern of behavior is textbook for people who "graduate" to more extreme physical abuse. Kicking a door down during an argument with your girlfriend is not "nothing." He probably needs counseling or anger management to disrupt the path he is moving down before it escalates into the types of things that put you out of the league, if not in jail. I hope we make those resources not only available, but strongly encouraged.

All the scouting reports mentions his lack of strength and inability to handle the double teams. If I remember right Reed is more of a rusher along with Lowry. I would like to see Landcaster back for those run heavy situations.

Usually when the old player's number is given away...it means it's over.

Ew.

Slaton is your guy there. Lancaster did what he did. He was ready to play from the jump but is the same guy. No trajectory.

Yes, Slaton is our designated run stuffer. I was very happy with him as a rookie, way higher ceiling than Lancaster.

I think Wyatt has an immediate role as pass rushing DL, maybe even sometimes subbing Preston or Gary as power rusher off the edge (since we have Lowry and Reed), while developing nuance and strength vs the run. Yes, Yoop is right that its rare to hit on a real good pass rushing DL, but Wyatt is in a GREAT situation getting to benefit from attention given to Clark, Preston and Gary.

With his explosion and speed, I drool at the prospect of stunts with Preston and Gary. Or just win vs 1-1 inside since Clark will draw the double team. Quick inside pressure has the least distance and takes least time to disrupt QBs who get rid of the ball quickly.

Wyatt as all-down DL? I have no idea. IF he develops the strength and anchor to not just fold vs double team blocks, could be real a exciting guy. Would have no problem moving or pursuing laterally as Clark does to stifle off-tackle and outside runs. If he's a liability vs run like Lowry was early on, floor as just a pass rush specialist, which is still valuable considering our powerful secondary.

Our 2020 and 2021 Defensive Line:

Kenny Clark
Dean Lowry
Kingsley Keke
Tyler Lancaster
No Names

Our 2022 Defensive line:

Kenny Clark
Dean Lowry
Jarran Reed
Devonte Wyatt
TJ Slayton

So Slayton replaces Lancaster and Wyatt replaces Keke. Reed replaces the other no namers.

Seems like a significant improvement to me.

I was intrigued by a comment Justis Mosqueda made on the Acme Packing podcast.

He pointed out with the addition of Wyatt and Quay our nickel D could be special.

Usually in nickel, with the extra defensive back, a team might be vulnerable to the run.

But the size of our EDGE rushers and linebackers gives it some major run stopping potential.

This line up could be beastly against both the run and the pass:

Clark, Wyatt
Preston, Quay, Campbell, Gary
Rasul, Amos, Jaire, Savage, Stokes

Rotate in Reed, Lowry and Enagbare to keep the front 7 fresh and we have the potential to cause offenses problems.

Just off the film, Wyatt continues to look like the guy who could have gone at 22. Certainly looks like a steal at 28.

Still unsure of the Quay pick. He may look great. Just not as sure about it with the signing of Campbell and my still favorable outlook of Barnes as an ILB2. But hey, maybe he comes out like a 1st rounder too.

I honestly think we will see Quay line up on the edge alot which will boost his value

When I watch the reps in which he moves the line of scrimmage back a little, reads the play from behind the line, sheds the block, and explodes toward the ball..... I mean just unreal. Now, he didn't do that every time; he wasn't asked to. He was also asked to read and react a lot more at UGA (as all of their front 4 players are asked to do) maybe a lot more than he will be in the NFL, so the explosive, upfield reps might be MORE relevant than the others. But it does look like he can do about anything.

Despite being a UGA guy, I genuinely wrote Wyatt off a bit. Older, character issues, 3rd best DT on the team.... but looking at him more in depth in light of the pick, it's difficult not to be optimistic--especially since he will STILL be on a line where he's the 3rd or 4th focus of the opposing offense, at least early on. This pick should be a massive hit, if his head's on right and he takes to coaching. I could see him becoming a top focal point of an offense in time.

Campbell when asked why he was successful in GB whereas he wasn't previously, mentioned that he was able to play a role like a 4-3 MLB in GB which plays to his strengths, instead of having 4-3 OLB duties.

Walker is a straight up 4-3 WLB, basically the ideal pairing with a guy like Campbell.

Typically a WLB is more valuable than a MLB, at least in draft capital. Linebackers that can actually for real cover professional tier pass catchers are rare and worth a whole lot, especially if they don't come with a bunch of other holes in their game.

if your analysis checks out....the defense should be FUN to watch next year. And I love good defense.

The Packers are clearly looking at having the double monster ILB rotation that Tampa has. We don't want to play the 3rd safety. We want to ILBs instead. Barnes didn't let us do that on passing downs due to being a liability in coverage. If Walker reaches his potential, we have two ILBs that can almost "do it all" which will absolutely destroy opponents.

I made it no secret how I wanted a competent 3rd safety. That all flushed down the drain after we picked Walker because our defensive philosophy is shifting.

We have really no investment at safety after our top two. We really have no investment at CB after our top 3.

This all leads me to believe we plan on being a base and nickle lineup almost exclusively.

I love the position grab at 22. My only real reservation is the player we are picking is high risk - high reward.

Nice.

I'm taking this to mean he's the most excited and ready to go in this draft class. And that means he'll be on his best behavior and win defensive rookie of the year. It's the only logical conclusion.
