That was because the other team got to choose whether to receive in the second half. So if you chose to kick in the first half, the other lot would choose to receive in the second, and you would never get the ball first.

I heard somebody explain that recently. If you win the toss, you are almost certain to defer. Because under some circumstances you could end up kicking off at the start of BOTH halves. That is why Jaire’s prank a few weeks ago was really bad.

Yes, if you ever pick kick, you will be kicking in the 2nd half as well. It honestly shouldn't even be an option.

agree, why even allow confusion, to me if you defer the opening kickoff you should automatically receive to start the 2nd half, hell, I thought that was the case all along.
