Who will be our #1 WR
Moderators: NCF, salmar80, BF004, APB, Packfntk
Reed, and Watson if he can stay healthy will be here when hell fires smolder, the rest who knows.
imho these two have exceptional gifts of athletic ability, with Watson it's obviously speed and size, with Reed it's quicks and run after catch.
will be interesting to watch all of these guys mature.

Not with me. See if Salmar wants to tackle that interesting problem.APB wrote: ↑26 Sep 2024 23:08I suppose I may need to copy/paste some dictionary definitions with you, too…RingoCStarrQB wrote: ↑26 Sep 2024 20:57In the context of the Packers offense, "interesting problem" should be self-explanatory....not require further discussion.APB wrote: ↑26 Sep 2024 09:55I don't see any "problem" with the WR corps whatsoever. They all bring certain talents and qualities that can be taken advantage of on any given play. They all have overlapping foundational talents, too, like blocking and low drop rates.
Having no clear cut, go to receiver is not a "problem" in my mind at all. It's scheme proof from an opponent perspective. Take away short area quickness Reed? Fine, we'll go to Wicks. Take away Doubs on 3rd down? Fine, we'll go Reed or Watson. Press at the line to disrupt the quick passing game? Fine, we'll hit Melton or Watson streaking up the sideline or down the seam. The matchup headaches these guys collectively present are endless.
This WR corps just offers so many options. The fact no one player is relied upon to carry the offense is an advantage, not a problem.
Now, @Yoop, if you wanna talk about individual attributes each brings to the table, that's something else entirely.

I have been a Wicks guy. Vikings seemingly have a good defense. With hopefully a good field (not Brazil) and Jordan Love back this may be the time for Wicks to have a impactful game.

I said it before, but I'm still sticking with Doubs. Yes, Reed is more dynamic. But Doubs is the guy who sees the ball on third downs. He is a polished route runner with good hands.
Reed is the electric guy. We'll see if he picks up more in the coming weeks.
Watson? Nah. Nothing compared to the start of his rookie campaign. What are we waiting for with him? Can't just use him as bait to draw the coverage. It's past time for him to produce.
Wicks? Seems like this game is too big for him just now. Is he lacking focus? Something going on there we don't know about?
Kraft is really showing special. But he put the ball down today too. Something for him to work on.
What is holding back Musgrave? Is he just on a more typical growth pattern for TEs? Some of them need a good three years to get going.

Has this been decided yet?
Does it need to?
Reed was Mr. September
Doubs was Mr. October, suspension notwithstanding
November = ? ... I feel like this tends to be when Watson comes alive.

The answer is no.
Reed was 9th, Watson and Wicks were tied for 10th and Doubs was 16th on the rate the roster poll.
You can drop Wicks to 16th and move Doubs in mix with Reed and Watson. But nobody is the ahead of the pack.

This is a good place to discuss Watson.
What is happening to this guy? He catches some short passes for first downs and occasional TDs. But is he living up to expectations? No. That's an easy answer. Has he been set back a bit because of injuries that thwart his career and make him more of a 2nd year player (with the typical 2nd year struggles)?
I am thinking he still benefits from having height, speed, and the long/rangy arms with good hands. But seems to me that he hasn't become a good route runner yet. And yeah, maybe the Ds always keep a Safety over the top on him too. But like Doubs has shown, good route running can overcome double coverage.
I want more from Watson and we should get more. We don't need to wait for freezing weather for it or 2025.

I'm still sticking by my vote that Doubs is our WR1, if we truly have one.
Yeah, Reed is more explosive. But Doubs is the one guy who can defeat coverage better than the others. And aside from the Lions game where he dropped a couple, he has as good of hands as anybody on the team. I doubt that he nabs 80+ catches. But we can say that about all of our WRs too.

Watson is a great complimentary piece but I don't know if he will ever develop into the main guy.
I kind of look at Watson as a really great upgraded version to what we had with MVS.

And before MVS, Bill Schroeder, Corey Bradford, and a host of others. (Neglecting to mention a certain WR who got famous catching two hail mary's in Arizona...) There are fast WRs who never fully develop. We've had our share. Maybe Watson will get there. Let's hope.

My opinion today is Doubs and Reed are our best WR's in general with the best ball skills. I define "ball skills" as like the same ability a great centerfielder in baseball has. The knack for quickly knowing where the ball is going (off the bat or out the QB's hand) and getting to the spot and in good position to make the catch doing whatever it takes. Both are better than Watson and Wicks at this.Scott4Pack wrote: ↑07 Nov 2024 14:34And before MVS, Bill Schroeder, Corey Bradford, and a host of others. Wicks has great feet and runs good routes, kind of like Davante, but has proved so far to have unreliable, drive killer hands.
Watson is who he is. Fast, but average ball skills who even when he has been healthy can be a non factor at times in games. I keep hoping for more.
Most of the time when we target Kraft, really good things happen. He continues to be a matchup issue for defenses and isn't used enough.
If the Packer have a chance to upgrade the position (WR) through draft (even first round IMO) they should.
So, there isn't really a #1. The Packers can win with the guys they have on the roster but it (WR position) could be upgraded with the right guy which I actually hope happens.
I wish the bears were in a different division because I would try to trade for DJ Moore without maybe having to give up much. The bears don't know what they are doing with him and he would thrive IMO in a MLF offense. He to me is like a bigger more muscular Jaden Reed. MLF would give him a career year.
Watson is a deep ball guy who doesn't track the deep ball very well. The misjudged deep ball miss against Detroit is just the latest example.
I think he's a good compliment to the room and he'll certainly have his weeks where he balls out statistically, but I don't know if he'll ever be a dependable producer or "go-to" type receiver who will win those high point/deep ball battles with any consistency.

I'd be ecstatic if the Packers could evolve into 'The Greatest Show on Turf, V2'. The sooner the better.
Or even the Lofton, Jefferson, Coffman, Dickey days.

I am actually willing to give Watson a pass on that particular play. The wind and weather were tricky enough that day, that a lofty pass could've easily been affected.APB wrote: ↑07 Nov 2024 16:35Watson is a deep ball guy who doesn't track the deep ball very well. I think Watson still might struggle with passes that he'd have to catch over the shoulder. But if the ball is in front of him, he seems to do fine. He's even had his share of contested catches.
